Vietnam Holds First Gay Pride Parade

The first gay pride parade in communist Vietnam took place in the capital Hanoi on Sunday with dozens of cyclists displaying balloons and rainbow flags streaming through the city?s streets.

Organised by the city?s small but growing Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community, the event went ahead peacefully with no attempt by police to stop the colorful convoy of about 100 activists despite their lack of official permission.

?There was no intervention which is a good thing for Vietnam,? said one of the organizers, Tam Nguyen.

She said the parade had helped unite the LGBT community and raise awareness among ?curious? onlookers, although many had no idea what the rainbow flag ? an international symbol for LGBT groups ? symbolized.

The cyclists attracted no hostility ? and only a little attention ? as they made their way down Hanoi?s busy streets.

?Vietnamese society supports us, supports this rally ? I have come out already and I have never had any problems,? Hung Culif, 22, told AFP at the start of the event.

The parade follows recent gay pride celebrations in Myanmar and Laos, reflecting tentative signs of liberalizing social attitudes in parts of Southeast Asia.

Homosexuality remains largely taboo in Vietnam, where Confucian social mores ? with their emphasis on tradition and family ? still dominate.

Gays are routinely portrayed in the media as comical figures or as people suffering from a condition that can be treated.

But in a surprise move late last month, Justice Minister Ha Hung Cuong said that it might be time to consider a change in the law to recognize same-sex marriage.

Vietnam currently forbids same?sex unions. Any move to legalize gay marriage would make Vietnam the first nation in Asia to do so.

The cyclists voiced strong support for the possible legal changes, shouting ?we support same?sex marriage? and calling for equal rights for gays and lesbians.

?There is a lot of attention on gay rights issues now,? Le Minh, 21, said as she attached a rainbow flag to her bicycle.

?There were [many] questions about gay marriage at the recent National Assembly session. It is really good for the community,? she said.

Activists said they had modified the parade route after coming under pressure from police to avoid sensitive areas of the capital where anti-China demonstrations were taking place. Vietnam tightly restricts demonstrations.

?We don?t have permission for this and even if we had asked for official permission it would not have been possible? to obtain, said Van Anh, 51. ?But we have a lot of support from Vietnamese society.?

Gays and lesbians in Vietnam still suffer from discrimination ? particularly from family members ? she said, adding that the pride parade and the possible marriage law change could help break down social stigma.

?As the National Assembly is now considering this, we hope that they will amend the law [to allow gay marriage], which would be a very positive thing for Vietnam, for Vietnamese culture,? she added.

'Girls Who Code' inspires teens to learn about tech

'Girls who Code' is a program that trains young women for jobs in so called STEM jobs-science, technology, engineering and math - fields where women continue to experience a gender gap.?NBC's Janelle Richards reports.?? ???????

By Janelle Richards, NBC News

NEW YORK -- ?School was out and summer had finally arrived, but instead of hanging out at the beach teenager?Jocelyn Stevens was sitting in front of a computer, using a software program to design jewelry. With just a click of her mouse, Stevens created a ring and used a 3D printer to produce it.

Before taking part in the eight-week summer program Girls Who Code, 16-year-old Stevens said the only thing she knew about technology was how to play computer games.

She wanted to change that.

"I felt like this program would benefit me, and I felt like I would rather do something that would be benefit me, than not doing anything [this summer]," Stevens said.

Now, Stevens is familiar with mobile applications. Last week she worked with her team ? three other girls in the program -- to create an app that shows parents where they can take their families around New York City.

"Somewhere in my future, not so far from now, I could see myself doing computer science," she said.

And that's exactly what Girls Who Code aims to do: develop a passion for technology among girls who have not had much exposure to the field.

Changing perceptions?

The program was created by Reshma Saujani, a former deputy public advocate for New York City.

"I think that this world would look like a very different place if we had more female developers and coders and engineers and entrepreneurs," said Saujani. "Girls are so passionate about technology...it's simply not the case that they aren't interested and it's not the case that they're not good at it....it's just that there's a perception out there that they're not interested, that they're not as good as the boys and that's exactly what we're changing every single day."

Saujani ran for Congress in 2010 and was struck by the number of girls in a public housing project who were interested in technology but did not have the resources to pursue it.?

"They had like one computer in the basement of a church," said Saujani. "And then I'd be on the Upper East Side at a private school where there was a robotics lab -- and you saw how technology can be a huge equalizer, but it can enhance poverty if we're not giving young girls and young boys equal access."

The inequalities Saujani witnessed motivated her to start Girls Who Code this year.?The students in the program are diverse, representing 12 different countries.

In addition to?teaching the students hands-on skills like programming and coding, Saujani and executive director Kristen Titus are also preparing them for a future career at a major technology company. They partnered with Google, Intel, AppNexus and Twitter, among others, to help shape their summer curriculum and asked the companies what skills future employees need to be successful in the technology field.

Those companies also help fund Girls Who Code, making it free of charge for the students. Eventually, they plan to offer internship opportunities.?

"We've built out a robust curriculum that teaches the girls everything from robotics to web design to how to build a company, how to build a mobile app, what is a bank account, how do I get a loan, all of these hard and soft skills that we know are instrumental," said?Kristen Titus, executive director of?Girls Who Code.

Closing the gender gap in STEM jobs

Developing women's interest in science, technology, engineering and math (often referred to as STEM) is an important goal for Girls Who Code. The U.S. Department of Commerce reported women are underrepresented in STEM undergraduate degrees and jobs. In 2009, there were 2.5 million college-educated working women with STEM degrees, compared to 6.7 million men. And throughout the past decade, women have held less than 25 percent of STEM jobs even though they fill close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy.

Similar programs are popping up around the country. In Washington, D.C., CodeNow and Youth Lab train high school girls and boys, too. The students learn how websites work and are paired with mentors throughout their learning process.?

In San Francisco, Calif., Kimberly Bryant, an electrical engineer, started Black Girls Code in April 2011 after she attended several technology events in Silicon Valley and noticed the lack of women and minorities at the events.

?I was networking to start my own company,? said Bryant. ?And then I ended up starting this nonprofit that directly introduces girls to technology and gets them in the pipeline.?

Black Girls Code offers classes for girls ages 6 to 20 on how to develop video games, build a website, and study robots. And this summer, the program is hosting one-day workshops for minority students in several cities including Chicago, Atlanta, New York and Las Vegas.

'I think I'm going to change the world someday'

Back in New York City, the students at Girls Who Code are already thinking about how they can give back to their communities.

Khady Samb, 16, moved to the Bronx from Senegal in March 2011.

"Being here is like, it was my dream, I didn't know anything about computers," said Samb. "We had them [in Senegal] but I didn't know a lot of things on it. Here, it's like I have anything I need and I learned something about computers that I never learned, it is very exciting."

Just a few weeks into the program, Samb says the skills she has learned may help her Senegalese community one day.

"I think I'm going to change the world someday," said Samb. "I'm going to go to my country and help them use the computer and I will do it for free and I think that will change the world. I have a lot of things to think about."?

BEIRUT (AP) ? Gunmen snatched 47 Iranian pilgrims just outside Damascus on Saturday in a brazen attack that revealed the growing instability at the center of President Bashar Assad's power.

The abduction came as Syrian troops moved to crush one of the last rebel-dominated neighborhoods in the capital, shelling the area heavily. No group immediately claimed responsibility, although Iranian state media blamed the rebels fighting the Assad regime.

The pilgrims were on a bus taking them from the suburb of Sayeda Zeinab, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Damascus, to the airport to return home when they were kidnapped, according to the Iranian state news agency, IRNA.

Mainly Shiite Iran is a close ally of the beleaguered Syrian government, which is dominated by the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiism. Syria has long welcomed Iranian pilgrims visiting the ornate gold-domed shrine of Sayeda Zeinab, the Prophet Muhammad's granddaughter; up to 700,000 pilgrims used to come every year, IRNA said, although the number has fallen precipitously since the 17-month uprising that has killed an estimated 19,000.

Late Saturday, Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency announced that Syrian forces had freed the hostages, but cited no source. There was no confirmation from the Syrians.

Still, the kidnapping underscores the inability of the regime, which is fighting rebels in all the major cities of the country, to even control the immediate environs of the capital city.

Just a few miles from the site of the kidnapping, regime forces encircled the southern Damascus neighborhood of Tadamon, a bastion of rebel support. Heavy explosions shook the capital Saturday, and plumes of smoke rose from the neighborhood that was attacked by regime forces the night before.

"We heard heavy bombing since dawn," a witness in Damascus told The Associated Press, asking that his name not be used out of fear for his personal safety. "Helicopters are in the sky." By nightfall the state media reported the whole capital to be in government hands, but such announcements have in the past proved premature.

The kidnapping was the largest such abduction of Iranian pilgrims, although it was not the first.

In January, gunman kidnapped 11 Iranian pilgrims driving from the Turkish border to Damascus. At least two were later freed with Turkish mediation. Seven Iranian engineers building a power plant in central Syria were kidnapped in December and the Free Syrian Army claimed responsibility, accusing them of aiding Assad's regime. At least four have been released.

Sunni Muslim militants often attacked Iranian pilgrims visiting holy sites in neighboring Iraq during the years of unrest there. There have been reports of an influx of such militants into Syria since the uprising began. Targeting the pilgrims maybe seen as attacking allies of the regime.

A Syrian-based Sunni militant group posted on jihadi web forums that it had kidnapped and executed a prominent Syrian television broadcaster, who had been reported missing since July 19.

The al-Nusra Front announced that Mohammed Saeed, presenter for the Syrian "Talk of the Town" program, had been captured and put on trial before being executed.

"Perhaps this operation and others will serve as an example to all who support this tyrannical regime," said the statement, which included a photo of Saeed, apparently while in the militants' custody.

The new violence in Damascus reflected the regime's difficulty in keeping rebels down even at the center of its rule. Two weeks ago, the government crushed the rebels' biggest yet campaign in the capital city that included incursions by fighters into downtown neighborhoods and an audacious bomb attack that killed four members of Assad's inner circle.

The main battle, however, has now moved to Syria's largest city of Aleppo, some 350 kilometers (215 miles) north of Damascus, where rebels seized several neighborhoods two weeks ago and have proved difficult to dislodge.

On Saturday, hundreds of rebels attacked the strategic television broadcast building and were only driven off after a three-hour battle in which the government resorted to jet fighters and helicopter gunships.

Clashes were also reported around the medieval citadel, a symbol of the city that dominates its ancient center, suggesting the rebels are trying to expand their hold.

Aleppo is Syria's commercial hub and close to the Turkish border where the rebels have their rear bases. If the opposition were to gain control, it would be a major blow to the regime and a possible opposition base of operations.

More heavily armed government troops, however, have been steadily shelling the rebel-controlled parts of the city, particularly Salaheddine neighborhood, suggesting Aleppo will not fall to the rebels anytime soon.

On Saturday, China said the West should be blamed for obstructing diplomatic and political efforts to restore order and peace in Syria. Wang Kejian, a deputy director of north African and west Asian affairs at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told a news conference that Western countries had hindered and sabotaged the political process by advocating regime change.

Wang reiterated China's stance that the solution to the Syria crisis should be a political one and that it is opposed to any military intervention.

Turkey also reported the defection of another Syrian general, along with five colonels who came over the border with a group of refugees. The general would be the 29th to defect since the start of the uprising. Despite the defections, however, the Syrian army has largely remained intact.

Birds that live with varying weather sing more versatile songs

ScienceDaily (Aug. 3, 2012) ? A new study of North American songbirds reveals that birds that live with fluctuating weather are more flexible singers.

Mixing it up helps birds ensure that their songs are heard no matter what the habitat, say researchers at Australian National University and the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center.

To test the idea, the researchers analyzed song recordings from more than 400 male birds spanning 44 species of North American songbirds -- a data set that included orioles, blackbirds, warblers, sparrows, cardinals, finches, chickadees and thrushes.

They used computer software to convert each sound recording -- a medley of whistles, warbles, cheeps, chirps, trills and twitters -- into a spectrogram, or sound graph. Like a musical score, the complex pattern of lines and streaks in a spectrogram enable scientists to see and visually analyze each snippet of sound.

For each bird in their data set, they measured song characteristics such as length, highest and lowest notes, number of notes, and the spacing between them.

When they combined this data with temperature and precipitation records and other information such as habitat and latitude, they found a surprising pattern -- males that experience more dramatic seasonal swings between wet and dry sing more variable songs.

"They may sing certain notes really low, or really high, or they may adjust the loudness or tempo," said co-author Clinton Francis of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center.

The Pyrrhuloxia or desert cardinal from the American southwest and northern Mexico and Lawrence's goldfinch from California are two examples.

In addition to variation in weather across the seasons, the researchers also looked at geographic variation and found a similar pattern. Namely, species that experience more extreme differences in precipitation from one location to the next across their range sing more complex tunes. House finches and plumbeous vireos are two examples, Francis said.

Why might this be?

"Precipitation is closely related to how densely vegetated the habitat is," said co-author Iliana Medina of Australian National University. Changing vegetation means changing acoustic conditions.

"Sound transmits differently through different vegetation types," Francis explained. "Often when birds arrive at their breeding grounds in the spring, for example, there are hardly any leaves on the trees. Over the course of just a couple of weeks, the sound transmission changes drastically as the leaves come in."

"Birds that have more flexibility in their songs may be better able to cope with the different acoustic environments they experience throughout the year," Medina added.

A separate team reported similar links between environment and birdsong in mockingbirds in 2009, but this is the first study to show that the pattern holds up across dozens of species.

Interestingly, Francis and Medina found that species with striking color differences between males and females also sing more variable songs, which means that environmental variation isn't the only factor, the researchers say.

Amazon adds 'scan and match' feature to Cloud Player

37 min.

On Tuesday, the folks at Amazon announced a feature that's been added to Cloud Player: Scan and match.

This new feature enables something very similar to Apple's iTunes Match on Amazon's?cloud-based music streaming?service.?You allow Amazon to scan your iTunes or Windows Media Player libraries in order to match songs you own to those in Amazon's catalog. All of the matched songs ??whether they were purchased from iTunes, ripped from CDs, or otherwise acquired ??become instantly available in Cloud Player.

As with iTunes Match, the songs that you'll find in Cloud Player will be 256 Kbps, no matter how low-quality your own versions were (though Amazon hasn't yet confirmed which file format it's using to deliver the streamed audio).?You can access Cloud Player?? and stream?these matched songs?? from a Kindle Fire, Android device, iPhone, iPod Touch or any Web browser.?In a side bit of good news, both Sonos and Roku players will soon get Amazon Cloud Players, too.

When it comes to cost, Amazon's press release contains a little too much ambiguity, which we're hoping to solve with a phone call. It appears that?the scan and match service comes at no additional cost, but it's restricted to streaming songs from the cloud ? in other words, just because it's matched doesn't mean you can download it and play it locally, the way you can on an?iOS device or computer?using?with iTunes Match.?

If you want to upload actual tracks into Amazon's cloud service, that is what might cost you money.?There's a free version of Cloud Player that lets you store all of the MP3s you've ever purchased on Amazon, along with up to 250 songs uploaded from your own collection. But if you want to upload your own collection, again, in order to keep them safe and to be able to download them elsewhere, no strings attached, that will cost you $25 per?year. You'll be limited to 250,000 songs (but that is a lot).

I'm going to give Cloud Player's new scan and match feature a try.?Here's hoping that Amazon got things right.
