BOSTON BOMBING SUSPECTS' MOTHER: 'This ... - Business Insider

Natick Police

Zubeidat K. Tsarnaeva, the?mother of Boston bombing suspects?Dzhokar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, told television networks that she believes her sons were set up.?

"I am 100 percent sure that this is a setup," she told Russia Today. "My two sons are really innocent and neither of them have ever talked about what they said now."?

She added later, however, that her older son, Tamerlan, got involved in "religious politics" five years ago. And she appeared to suggest that she had been contacted by the FBI about Tamerlan prior to the marathon bombing attacks.?

"He was controlled by the FBI for five years," she said."They knew what my son was doing, they knew what sites on the Internet he was going [to], they used to come...and talk to me...they were telling me that he was a serious leader and they were afraid of him."?

"So how could this happen?"

"It's impossible for both of them to do those things," she added. "If there was anyone who would know, it would be me, the mother."?

Her remarks echo those of other relatives of the suspects, including their father and their aunt, both of whom insisted Friday that the two men were innocent and had been set up by the police.?

Mercedes-Benz GLA concept puts laser projectors in headlights, redefines SUV

MercedesBenz GLA concept puts laser projectors in headlights, redefines the SUV as 'sporty'

All pretty young things eventually require face-lifts to stay fresh. And the same goes for car models too, which in the SUV's case means a total body lift. Mercedes-Benz is planning to do just that to the category, with an official unveiling of its Concept GLA premium compact SUV planned for the Shanghai Auto Show next week. The sportier, "more coupe-like" vehicle has a 208-horsepower four-cylinder turbocharged gas engine, 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, 4Matic all wheel drive and -- wait for it -- headlamps with laser projectors. Oh yes, really. Despite what you may think, the laser light show isn't all just for neat tricks, though you can display any photos or video compatible (shared via phone, hard drive or the wild interwebs) with the car's in-dash COMAND system. No, there's a practical purpose that prompted Mercedes-Benz' German engineers to include the feature: a real-time navigation overlay. And lest we forget, there's one last scintillating tidbit of this concept car's posh perspective. It also features 65-feet of hand-stitched interior leather. We believe the correct response you're searching for is: !#$&%. And we'd agree.

FBI releases photos of bombing suspects

[Updated at 8 p.m. ET]

BOSTON ? The FBI intensified its manhunt in the Boston Marathon bombing case on Thursday by releasing images of two men they deem to be suspects. Investigators asked that anyone with information about the men or who may have seen them in the vicinity of the race finish line on Monday to step forward with information as soon as possible.

At a late-afternoon news conference here, FBI Special Agent Richard Deslauriers released surveillance tape and displayed photos of two young men captured in the moments before the twin explosions that killed 3 and injured 170.

"Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers or family members," Deslauriers said. ?Though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us."

[PHOTOS: View a gallery of the images released by the FBI]

The release of the images represented a significant breakthrough in a massive manhunt that has consumed local, state and federal law enforcement since the detonation of two shrapnel-packed bombs that plunged the annual Patriot's Day race?the nation's most prestigious marathon?into terror and chaos.

The man Deslauriers called Suspect One is seen wearing a dark hat, while Suspect Two is wearing a white hat. Deslaurier said Suspect Two is believed to have set a backpack down in front of the Forum restaurant along the marathon route near Copley Square.

Deslauriers said the two men appeared to be walking together along Boylston Street in the vicinity of the explosions.

"We know the public will play a critical role in identifying and locating these individuals. Somebody out there knows these individuals," Deslauriers said.

He described the men as likely armed and extremely dangerous, and said no one should try to take any action to apprehend them. He said those with information should contact law enforcement.

On Thursday morning, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano asked for the public's help in identifying possible suspects.

"I wouldn't characterize them as suspects under the technical term, but we need the public's help in locating these individuals," Napolitano said when asked to give an update on the marathon probe during a Committee on Homeland Security budget meeting on Capitol Hill.

"The investigation is proceeding apace," Napolitano added. "This is not an 'NCIS' episode. Sometimes you have to take the time to properly put the chain together to identify the perpetrators."

Also on Thursday morning, the U.S. attorney's office for the District of Massachusetts sent out a tweet encouraging anyone with information to submit clues, video or photos to an FBI Web page dedicated to the investigation.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama flew to Boston on Thursday to attend an interfaith memorial service and visit hospitalized victims. "Every one of us has been touched by this attack on your beloved city. Every one us stands with you," Obama told the crowd attending the church service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston.

There, Obama honored the families of those killed in the blast?Martin Richard, 8, of Dorchester; Krystle Campbell, 29, of Medford; and Lingzi Lu, 23, a Boston University graduate student from China.

The improvised explosive devices were located about 100 yards apart in the bustling Copley Square area. Several blocks of Boston's downtown remain closed as authorities comb the area for evidence.

Feds raid apartment after Boston bombing

Boston was battered but vigilant on Tuesday as an army of federal agents raced to find out who attacked the city?s historic marathon, leaving three dead and more than 100 injured amid a war zone of shattered glass and bomb debris on Patriots Day.

As of Tuesday morning, no persons or group had claimed credit for twin explosions at the finish line near Boston?s Copley Square. The Pakistani Taliban, a group that has threatened the United States in the past, denied participation, according to the Associated Press.

Law enforcement officials questioned an injured Saudi national at a local hospital, but news stories indicated that the individual appears to have no connection to the case. The Boston Globe reported that he was simply a frightened spectator who had tried to flee but was tackled and restrained by bystanders.

On Monday night agents from the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and other law enforcement agencies raided a unit in a high-rise apartment on Ocean Drive in the seaside Boston suburb of Revere, according to information posted online by a participating local fire department. Several bags, including what appeared to be a large duffel bag, were removed from the scene. Authorities were mum as to the specifics of their suspicions but confirmed that the Revere search was related to the case.

Rep. William Keating (D) of Massachusetts, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, told a local CBS reporter that the two bombs at the finish line, which exploded seconds apart, had been stashed in trash receptacles and were clearly a ?coordinated attack.? Authorities have discovered two other unexploded devices, he told Boston?s WBZ News.

Other reports said no unexploded devices had been found. A reported fire at Boston?s John F. Kennedy Presidential Library turned out to be the result of an electrical problem and was unrelated to the marathon bombs, according to Boston police.

NBC News reported that the explosive devices near the finish line had been packed with ball bearings to enhance their lethality. Doctors treating some of the 126 wounded at local hospitals said many had been hurt by metal shrapnel, though they added it was unclear whether the metal in question had simply been part of the environment or was the result of a shredded trash receptacle.

Police have issued an alert for a rental van that may have tried to gain access to the finish line area and for a man in dark clothing and a hood seen leaving the scene shortly before the blast, reported NBC. Surveillance video shows a hooded figure carrying two backpacks at about that time.

Among the dead is 8-year-old Martin Richard, whose father was running in the race. The boy's mother and sister were also gravely injured, according to a Boston Globe report. The family had gathered at the finish line for cheers and celebrations.

Although President Obama did not use the word ?terrorism? in remarks to the nation Monday evening, other US officials made it clear that the bombing is being treated as a terrorist attack. That would make it the first such strike on US soil since Sept. 11, 2001, and a deadly reminder that it is impossible to armor all national activities against a terrorist threat.

One thing is clear: The bomber or bombers were not highly skilled. The explosive devices were relatively crude compared with those produced overseas by Al Qaeda or other radical Islamist terrorist groups, RAND Corp. terror expert Brian Jenkins told Los Angeles television. They were much smaller than the powerful truck bomb that Timothy McVeigh used to devastate the federal building in Oklahoma City in April 1995.

In that sense they were analogous to the pipe bombs that killed two and injured 100 in 1996 at Atlanta?s Centennial Park during the Olympics.

The fact that the target was an event of great significance to Boston but not particularly significant to the wider world could indicate that the bomber was a local or at least a native of the United States. The explosions occurred on April 15, tax day, which could be a further indication of a domestic connection.

But the bombs were not directed against a government building or institution, which is often a hallmark of disaffected, lone-wolf domestic terrorists, noted some terrorism analysts. And the style of the attack, in which one explosion was closely followed by another, mimics that used by numerous groups in the Middle East.

One government official told the Los Angeles Times that his guess would be ?self-radicalized Islamic extremists from the area.?

Meanwhile, a large area of Back Bay Boston remained sealed off as an enormous outdoor crime scene. Police were working their way through a mountain of bags and other debris left by the fleeing crowd in an effort to ensure that no further explosives will detonate. Cities across the US tightened security, just in case ? New York City dispatched police critical response teams to guard sensitive sights, while in Washington the Secret Service expanded the security perimeter around the White House.

In London, authorities were reviewing security plans for Sunday?s London Marathon, the next such major international race.

Bitcoin And The End Of Money

Image (1) scaled.Dont_Panic.jpg for post 151437A commentator on Bloomberg, Princeton student Evan Soltas, writes that Bitcoin is an "existential threat to the modern liberal state," a line that can be read in two ways. One reading of his op-ed suggests we are all in danger and that the inability to tax and track bitcoins will result in a thriving black market and reduced fiscal control that will be disastrous for all of us. Taken another way - and given Soltas' biases, I suspect he's focusing a bit more on the "liberal" part of the title versus the "modern" part - it suggests that the modern nation cannot afford to fritter money away on the welfare of its people because it will no longer be able to tax the rich unfairly, leading to a fiscal nirvana for men and women of a certain breed. Either way, it's a goofy way to look at will remain, for the time being, a blip on the economic radar.
