Dilemmas of Codependent Men

The dilemmas of codependent men aren't talked about. Unlike women, few men discuss their relationship problems with friends and family. Instead, they internalize their pain. Many are in denial, suffer in silence, have an addiction and/or become numb to their needs and feelings. They shun attention and try to do the right thing and be good sons, husbands, and fathers, focusing instead on making a living and meeting the needs of their wives and children. These codependent men sacrifice themselves and believe that their needs, including the need for time away from their wives, are selfish.

Societal and cultural values have shamed men as weak for expressing feelings or needs, which reinforces codependent traits of control, suppression of feelings, and denial of needs. Often they turn to addiction in order to cope.EzineSeeker.com

Dysfunctional Childhood

The societal norm for male suppression of feelings is compounded and distorted if you grew up in a dysfunctional family where it wasn't safe to express feelings and needs.

It's easier not to acknowledge feelings that are criticized or needs that are denied or shamed. Your needs were also ignored if you took on age-inappropriate responsibilities because of an out of control, irresponsible, or immature parent. If there was abuse or addiction present, you probably grew up in an atmosphere of chaos, conflict, strict rules, or unpredictability. Self-control helped you survive, but controlling yourself or others leads to problems later in intimate relationships.

Feeling Trapped and Fearing Abandonment

Despite the prevalence of codependent women, I see many codependent men in my private practice. There's a dance that codependent couples do, and it takes two who know the steps. If you think your wife is codependent, there's a good chance you are, too. Often codependent men are attracted to women who are needy, demanding, jealous, or critical. Men become dependent on their wives' approval, and then feel trapped by their manipulation, demands, or expectations. They're unable to set boundaries and fear emotional retaliation and/or rejection, including withholding of sex.

Their wives may be very emotional, providing a sense of aliveness to the relationship and compensating for the numbness many codependent men feel inside. In the beginning, a man can feel powerful, helping a needy girlfriend or wife and giving her attention or gifts. He conforms to her expectations, while being assured that she won't abandon him, but eventually discovers that it's never enough to satisfy her. Sometimes, these women have mental health issues, are addicted to drugs or alcohol, or are financially desperate.

Some men end up becoming workaholics to justify alone time, but their needs for nurturing, respect, freedom, and appreciation, just to name a few, go unmet. Fear of rejection and abandonment are powerful motivators for codependency, usually because of early emotional abandonment by a parent. Consequently, the men never leave ? physically ? but withdraw to the safety of a self-made emotional prison. After a while, they feel trapped, controlled, and resentful. They may use drugs or addictive behavior to manage anxiety and depression, while some look outside the marriage for validation. However, it's not their wives that are the cause of their problem, it's their codependency.

Intimacy

Frequently, a woman brings her partner into therapy wanting more intimacy and to get him to be more open and share his feelings. Often, it's revealed that he's fully capable of communicating his feelings, but instead of being assertive and setting healthy boundaries that make it safe for him to do so, he reacts to criticism and demands by fighting back, emotionally withdrawing, or endlessly placating her with explanations and apologies that don't suffice.

Codependent couples are reactive because they each lack autonomy and are emotionally dependent upon each other. Problems of closeness and separateness are typical. Couples may keep a safe distance or take turns pushing one another away to avoid the emotional intensity of becoming too close. Intimacy escalates anxiety of being hurt by criticism or rejection or being suffocated and losing themselves and their autonomy. Yet, despite unhappiness or frustration, they don't leave and draw each other in after a conflict or separation, so as not to be abandoned.

Abused Men

Some men are verbally and even physically abused by their wives and girlfriends and don't know how to handle it. Often, they're afraid that authorities won't believe that their wives are violent and feel humiliated and ashamed that they can't deal with it themselves. Sometimes, their wives threaten to lie, or do so, and accuse their partners of violence. These men keep their secret and suffer silently. They can learn to value themselves and change the relationships dynamics by healing their codependency and setting boundaries.

Codependency and Addiction

Men who are addicts are also codependent. Their lives revolve around their addiction ? whether it's a drug (including alcohol), sex, gambling, food, or work ? which they use to modulate their mood and self-esteem. They try to control their addiction and people around them in order to maintain the addiction. Meanwhile, they are controlled by it. Abstinence or sobriety allows them to work on the underlying issues of codependency. Recovery includes regaining autonomy and self-esteem, and the ability to manage their thinking, emotions and life problems.

The realities of adopting from foster care

M?Lisa and Ryun always knew that they wanted to adopt children and got their foster care license as soon as M?Lisa was old enough. Their family received their first foster placement two weeks before M?Lisa's 21st birthday. All of a sudden at not even 21, M?Lisa was the temporary mom to a 12-year-old. As M?Lisa recounts the story of the six months the child was in her home, she says that the experience was a million times harder than she could ever have imagined. Though the first placement ended with the child being admitted to a psychiatric facility, that didn't discourage M?Lisa and her husband from wanting to continue helping children.

The package deal

"In just three years, the carefree couple had transformed into a family of five with special needs kids."

One day, the couple received a call about a 3-year-old boy who was part of a package deal with his 5-year-old brother, and this wasn't just a strictly foster situation?? the agency was looking for an adoptive home. In less than two weeks, the boys were moved into their home forever. Over the next few years, their family went through a lot of changes?? adopting a third child, who was 18 months old at the time, along the way. In just three years, they went from a carefree couple who played in a band together to a family of five with special needs kids.

The family moved and they toured a lot with their band (often taking the kids along with them). And eventually they settled in Los Angeles, where they went through the process to get their foster care license once again. The couple thought they'd adopt another child eventually, maybe two. Little did they know that three more kids were in store for them.

Three more?

While attending an adoption fair, they met a little girl who was part of a sibling group of three. They didn't think they were interested in taking on three more kids, but they were drawn to the girl and curiosity got the best of them. They had to meet the other two. It was love at first sight and soon the threesome would become their daughters.

And now here they are?? a blended, transracial family with six kids, two cats and two parents trying to balance marriage, parenting, art and passion.

M?Lisa says, "We?re both in our mid-thirties and we have a lot less time, money and sleep, but we honestly wouldn?t change a thing."

Former Clemens catchers back up pitcher at trial

(AP) ? Two catchers who were teammates of pitcher Roger Clemens said he played with integrity and refused to cut corners, the opposite of the image painted by prosecutors who're portraying him as a man who cheated to gain an edge and then lied about it to Congress.

"I don't think he'd cheat," said former journeyman catcher Charlie O'Brien, who caught Clemens' games for much of the 1997 season with the Toronto Blue Jays. O'Brien portrayed Clemens as such a stickler that he'd refuse to throw scuffed baseballs because he considered it cheating.

The former catcher testified Wednesday he once approached Clemens on the mound during a game with a scuffed ball and said, "This is a great ball to use." He said Clemens responded, "I don't need that."

O'Brien also said he had seen vitamin B12 "shots lined up ready to go" for players, a claim also made by Clemens and for which he was charged with obstructing Congress. The government maintains that Clemens concocted the B12 account as a cover for steroid injections.

During Clemens' trial, prosecutors have asked several government witnesses associated with major league teams whether they've ever seen B12 shots lined up, and all of them have said no. But O'Brien replied "Yes, sir" when defense lawyer Rusty Hardin posed that question.

Prosecutor Steven Durham quizzed him in an incredulous tone about that statement, but the burly O'Brien stuck to his story in a calm, matter-of-fact manner.

In a trial that's had its share of dry, scientific witnesses, the two ex-catchers provided colorful relief.

O'Brien said the Blue Jays' medical services at the time were very poor and said former Blue Jays head athletic trainer Tommy Craig was a nice guy but "might have been one of the worst trainers." O'Brien also had trouble recognizing Clemens in a Blue Jays team photo and couldn't supply the proper name to the jury for the former New York Yankees pitcher known widely as El Duque. "What's his name, Roger?" O'Brien blurted out toward the defense table, but Hardin laughingly waved Clemens off before he could respond that the player was Orlando Hernandez.

The other backstop was Darrin Fletcher, Clemens' catcher with the Jays in 1998. When Hardin said good afternoon, Fletcher replied, "How we doing?" and frequently called the lawyer by his first name.

He said Clemens was a "big strong man" who set the standard for work ethic.

"Did Roger Clemens ever cut corners?" Hardin asked.

"Cut corners?" he replied with a taken-aback look and a smile. "No."

He gave up some of Clemens' trade secrets as a pitcher. Clemens, for example, would purse his lips on the mound to ask for curveballs.

"You're not making a comeback any time are you, Roger?" Fletcher said. "I'm not giving anything away, am I?" Clemens laughed.

Fletcher said it was important to make sure that batters didn't steal signs, because "the whole integrity of the game is ruined if the hitter knows what's coming."

He also testified that he didn't see Clemens at a pool party at teammate Jose Canseco's house in Florida in June of that season, but Fletcher also said he left the party around 1:30 p.m. A government witness recalled seeing Clemens at the party later in the day. One of the charges against Clemens is that he lied when he told Congress that he wasn't at the party at all.

Fletcher drew more laughter when he said it would have left an impression if he had seen Clemens.

"I've always wanted to see Roger in a bathing suit," he said, and Clemens chuckled again.

Clemens joined the Blue Jays at the age of 34 as a free agent after the Boston Red Sox did not re-sign him following the 1996 season. Boston's then-general manager, Dan Duquette, said at the time that Clemens was in the twilight of his career, but Clemens won the Cy Young Award the two next seasons for the Blue Jays.

In that second season in Toronto, Clemens met strength coach Brian McNamee, who says he injected the pitcher with steroids and HGH and testified that he had the impression the Clemens had used steroids previously. The government used its cross-examination of witnesses Wednesday to reinforce its claim that Clemens turned to performance-enhancing drugs to help his aging body recover more quickly during the physically demanding major league seasons.

The defense called Boston's assistant general manager at the time of Clemens' departure, Steven August, who testified he had recommended the team re-sign Clemens.

"I told Mr. Duquette that Roger was at the top of his game," August said. But in fact, Clemens had gone only 40-39 in his last four seasons with Boston, and had mediocre earned run averages over 4.00 in two of those years. August, who said he was good friends with Clemens, called the pitcher "extremely hardworking," and said younger players couldn't keep up with him during runs.

Amid the flood of testimonials to Clemens from defense witnesses, prosecutor Gil Guerrero at one point told August, "You understand he's not on trial for how great he was in baseball."

Weather service money shifting problems hit agency

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The head of the National Weather Service has suddenly retired and the agency is seeking an emergency $35.6 million from Congress because of allegations of financial mismanagement and money shifting within the agency.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief Jane Lubchenco, who oversees the weather service, said in a memo investigators found that agency officials moved tens of millions of dollars around without congressional approval, as required by law. The money went from being appropriated for technology improvements to meeting shortfalls in payroll and operations at local weather offices.

Weather service director Jack Hayes retired Friday. His chief financial officer was already on administrative leave.

Agency spokesman Scott Smullen said investigators found no evidence of corruption or personal financial gain. The agency will soon release a report on the issue.

ACLU lawsuit to challenge Ill. gay marriage ban

CHICAGO (AP) ? More than two dozen gay and lesbian couples in Illinois plan to file lawsuits Wednesday arguing that it's unconstitutional for the state to deny them the right to marry, a move advocates hope will lead to legalized same-sex marriage in Illinois.

The two lawsuits ? backed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois and the New York-based gay advocacy group Lambda Legal ? include couples from the Chicago area, Bloomington and Marion. Both challenge a state law that defines marriage as between a man and woman, arguing that the Illinois Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry under due process and equality clauses.

Legislation to eliminate the law's language that prohibits gay marriage is pending, but a vote isn't expected before the legislative session is scheduled to end this week. And although Illinois enacted same-sex civil unions last year, couples in the lawsuits said the limited rights and protections make them feel like second-class citizens.

The lead plaintiffs in the ACLU lawsuit, which includes nine couples, are Chicago police detective Tanya Lazaro and systems analyst Elizabeth Matos. The women, who've been together 15 years and have two children, reject the notion of a civil union.

"It's not the same thing as a marriage. We want our relationship, our love and our commitment we've shown for 15 years to be recognized like everybody else's," Lazaro said. "When you're growing up, you don't dream of civil unions."

Advocates hope the lawsuits will make their way to the Illinois Supreme Court.

Currently, the District of Columbia and six states ? Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont ? have legalized gay marriage, either because of legislation or the courts.

Courts decided for gay marriage in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa. A lawsuit challenging an Iowa law barring gay marriage prompted the Iowa Supreme Court to legalize it in 2009. However, the three justices up for retention elections the next year were voted off the bench after being targeted by groups angered by the court's decision.

Lambda Legal filed the Iowa lawsuit in 2005, and advocates say the time for Illinois is now.

It's a year after same-sex civil unions were enacted, and recent polls show public support for same-sex marriage has steadily increased. President Barack Obama said earlier this month that he endorsed gay marriage, and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn stepped up his public support.

"We've waited long enough," said John Knight, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Project of the ACLU of Illinois. "It certainly helps that our president from the great state of Illinois has come forward and been a leader in recognizing freedom of same sex couples to marry."

Civil unions give same-sex couples some, but not all, of the same legal rights and protections as marriage in Illinois, such as the power to decide medical treatment for a partner and to inherit a partner's property. When that law was approved, however, opponents including some religious and conservative groups said it was an unwanted step toward gay marriage.

"The courts shouldn't mandate it. Nobody should mandate homosexual marriage," Colleen Nolen, director of the conservative Concerned Women for America, said late Tuesday.

Phone messages left Tuesday evening with other conservative groups and at the offices of lawmakers who've spoken against civil unions or gay marriage in the past weren't immediately returned.

Lambda Legal, whose lawsuit has 16 couples, and the ACLU share the same goal to legalize gay marriage in Illinois but decided to pursue separate lawsuits because they have different historic missions. The lawsuits also slightly differ in legal reasoning.

Lambda Legal's lawsuit includes Janean Watkins and Lakeesha Harris, who were the first couple in line last year to get a civil union license from Cook County. They have been together for a dozen years and are raising six children, who are the reason Watkins wants to be married.

"We have the kids, it's important for them to see that the relationship we're in is validated by the state," she said.

Mind-reading robotic teachers are more... Anyone? Anyone? Attention-grabbing

You'd have thought that replacing a human teacher with a swanky robot would be enough to keep the kids interested, but apparently not. The University of Wisconsin-Madison found that supplying a robot teacher didn't in itself max out concentration. In one trial, they put a Wakamaru robot instructor in the classroom with only mediocre results. But then they switched it out for a robot that could read students' EEG signals to tell when they were enjoying Matthew Broderick daydreams, and which could then change its intonation or wave its metallic hands in response. That second robot resulted in far better scores when the students were subsequently quizzed about their lessons, proving once again that teaching is about more than preaching.

Exclusive: Glencore, Vitol keep oil flowing to Greece

LONDON (Reuters) - Debt-stricken Greece is surviving on oil priced at a premium from trading houses Vitol and Glencore, who have stepped in as suppliers of last resort after sanctions forced Greece to halt imports from its main supplier Iran.

Greece has been forced to halt Iranian oil purchases because of EU financial sanctions ahead of an oil embargo in effect from July 1.

The timing could hardly have been worse for Athens, which had become dependent on Iranian oil because most oil firms and banks would not extend it credit for fear it would default on its debts.

Trading sources told Reuters that Vitol and Glencore, the world's No.1 and 2 oil traders, have been supplying the bulk of the needs of Greece's top refiner Hellenic in the last two months.

Between them, the two firms have given Greece about 300 million euros ($375 million) in open credit financing, trading sources estimate, allowing Athens to keep buying oil without payment guarantees from banks.

Glencore has given credit for about 200 million euros, Vitol about 100 million, the trade sources said.

That has allowed Greece to avoid a steep slump in oil refining and escape fuel shortages. But the rescue has come at a price because the trading houses are said by traders at rival companies to be charging a hefty risk premium.

Vitol and Glencore declined to comment on their roles in supplying Greece. Hellenic also declined to comment.

"It is all very complicated with Greece. Every deal is separate from the other, for every cargo you have different terms," a trader at one of the two trading houses said.

Because of their deep pockets and their willingness to take risk, Vitol and Glencore are the only firms that have been able to keep large quantities of oil flowing to Greece.

"If I had to deliver to Greece now, I would be feeling very uncomfortable," said a dealer at a Russian trading house who does not supply Greece.

Referring to the risk that the two firms are taking, he added: "An operational hole of $100 million would have killed me. But I guess Glencore or Vitol can afford having it. After all, the Greeks will manage to repay somehow in the future."

State Iraqi and Saudi oil companies continue to supply small amounts of crude to Greece and some companies, including Shell, continue sporadic shipments.

KEEPING AFLOAT

Iran had been offering generous credit terms to sell its oil amid tightening sanctions, and was willing to overlook Greece's debt problems and sell oil via "open credit" - an industry term meaning payments for oil can be delayed for 60-180 days.

The open credit system is risky as neither party has the support of a bank's letter of credit in case of non-payment.

Last year, Greece turned to Iran as its main supplier despite pressure from Washington and Brussels to end such trade as part of a campaign against Tehran's nuclear program.

Other European Union countries, including Spain and Italy, are phasing out Iranian imports because of sanctions, but none became as reliant on Iran as Greece.

Greek refiners relied on Iran for more than half of its oil imports during some months last year. Hellenic accounts for around 70 percent of the country's refining capacity with three refineries processing around 310,000 barrels per day.

The Iranian flows to Greece dried up in March when EU banks refused to facilitate payments as a result of financial sanctions.

Then, Vitol and Glencore emerged as willing to enter open credit deals with Hellenic. Other firms shied away from making prolonged links, occasionally selling on a spot basis.

The trading houses are sourcing oil from Russia, Kazakhstan and Libya with Glencore supplying two tankers of Russian Urals crude, two Kazakh Caspian blend cargoes and one with Libyan crude a month.

Vitol is supplying one or two cargoes of Urals taking total monthly volumes of supplies by the two traders to about 150,000 barrels per day valued at about $500 million monthly covering over a half of Hellenic's crude needs.

"NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED"

Traders estimated the potential premium Glencore and Vitol is likely to be charging at 50 cents a barrel or more, which would result in an additional payment of at least $2.2 million per month.

"It's not for the faint-hearted, given that European banks cancelled letters of credit a while ago," said a trader at another Swiss-based trading house. His firm tried to supply Hellenic but found it impossible to take out insurance on these deliveries.

Both Vitol and Glencore declined to say whether they would continue supplies if Greece defaults and leaves the euro zone.

Both traders have a long history of taking on risk in exchange for hefty premiums when supplying crisis and even war-stricken countries - including Libya last year.

Both Glencore and Vitol have been buying hard assets including refineries and some traders speculate they might be interested in acquiring Hellenic, partly state-owned and slated for privatization. The companies declined comment on that prospect.

Hellenic generates profits despite falling fuel demand in austerity-hit Greece.

That may not last indefinitely. With European leaders now openly speaking of the possibility that Greece might be forced out of the euro after an inconclusive election on May 6, the risk involved in extending credit lines to Athens is growing.

"Highly indebted deficit nations in the Eurozone are burning oil and gas they cannot afford," Merrill Lynch said last week noting that Greece's oil demand has fallen 21 percent or 91,000 bpd from 2008 compared to a GDP contraction of 13 percent.

"We believe that a Greek euro exit will likely reduce domestic oil demand sharply, as it simply would become unaffordable in a new currency," it said.

First lady's book: On growing seeds, healthy kids

WASHINGTON (AP) ? From the beginning, Michelle Obama's kitchen garden has been an overachiever, churning out more peppers, parsley and eggplant than expected, and generating interest that ? yes, really ? crosses oceans.

Now, the first lady has added a 271-page book to her gardening resume, and Americans can read all about the planting misses that came with the hits, get tips on gardening at home, and, Mrs. Obama hopes, draw some inspiration that just might change their lives. Oh, and if it happens to help her husband's re-election campaign, that would be nice, too.

Lofty goals for a book about a garden.

In "American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America," Mrs. Obama holds out the raised vegetable beds on the South Lawn as "an expression of my hopes" for the nation's children. "Just as each seed we plant has the potential to become something extraordinary, so does every child," she writes.

The $30 book, released Tuesday by Crown Publishers, traces how a city kid from the South Side of Chicago who became a working mother and then a political spouse found herself fretting on that first planting day, March 20, 2009, about whether an L-shaped stretch of soil would prove fertile ground for a national conversation "about the food we eat, the lives we lead, and how all of that affects our children."

The book, which answers that question with a resounding yes, arrives just in time for her husband's re-election campaign.

And while the book is decidedly non-political, that fits perfectly with the Obama campaign's view that the first lady can do her husband a world of good simply by pushing the non-threatening causes such as healthy living that have made her a far more popular figure than the president himself. Mrs. Obama's favorability rating in the latest AP-GfK poll was 70 percent, compared with 58 percent for her husband.

The book's release comes with a flurry of media appearances. She's already been a TV frequent flyer to promote her "Let's Move" campaign to combat childhood obesity ? doing pushups with Ellen DeGeneres, playing tug-of-war with Jimmy Fallon in the White House and serving veggie pizza to Jay Leno. She says she gets asked about the garden wherever she goes, around the world.

The book is chock full of colorful, glossy photos of luscious-looking vegetables, complete with a cover picture in which the first lady's blouse seems to be color-coordinated with the eggplants in her bulging basket of produce. Bo, the popular family dog, gets plenty of cameo appearances. There are maps tracing the growth of the garden over the past three years, and stories about community gardens around the country. Even a how-to on creating a compost bin.

The book is divided into four sections marking the seasons, and includes a complement of recipes for each.

There are inside stories about planting travails that will ring true with any weekend gardener: pumpkins that wouldn't grow, cantaloupes that tasted blah, blackberry bushes that wouldn't play nice with the raspberry bushes and an invasion of cucumber beetles, among them. The first lady makes clear she's not the one doing most of the hoeing and weeding, crediting school kids, White House chefs and grounds crew and enthusiastic volunteers from all over the White House chain of command with providing lots of manpower.

And there are bits of historical trivia woven throughout: John Adams ordered up the first White House garden, but it was never harvested after he lost re-election. Thomas Jefferson was obsessed with trying to grow a four-foot-long cucumber. Heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, at 101 now a figure in the John Edwards' corruption trial, helped redesign the Rose Garden for President John Kennedy.

There are also bits of personal history: Mrs. Obama's father worked as a boy on one of the vegetable trucks that would deliver produce to neighborhoods, and had a reputation for sneaking pieces of fruit. Her mother's family had a plot in a neighborhood victory garden on the corner of an alley, and the kids had to eat their vegetables or go to bed without supper.

It is a tradition for first ladies to use books to advance their causes. Hillary Clinton wrote the best-seller "It Takes a Village," about the importance of community in raising children; and Laura Bush collaborated with daughter Jenna on a picture book about a reluctant reader, with "Read All About It!"

This is Michelle Obama's first book. She got no advance payment, and plans to donate all her proceeds to the National Park Foundation for programs that promote gardening and healthy eating, and to help care for the White House garden.

Building Relationships through Trust, Listening, and Value

By Steve Braverman, Director of Sales & Marketing Programs

Sales reps, who typically tend to be pretty social by nature, will often try to build rapport with customers based on a ?sales truism? that people buy from people they like.? While likability is important, it is crucial not to confuse great customer rapport with a great customer relationship.? In fact, too much time spent building rapport (i.e. schmoozing) may actually backfire if the sales reps start to wear out their welcome.

While rapport is important, the building blocks for great customer relationships are based on trust, listening, and providing value:

Trust.? Trust is foundational to all relationships, including sales.? Research suggests that five major factors can increase trust:

    • Reliability
    • Honesty
    • Responsiveness
    • Objectivity
    • Competence

Sales people should always keep these factors in mind whenever interacting with a customer.

Listening.? Listening is probably one of the best ways to build a great relationship with a customer and will help you throughout the entire Sales Process.? Unfortunately, many sales professionals are poor listeners ? they feel like they need to do all of the talking.? A good rule of thumb is that you should do 1/3 of the talking and the customer should do 2/3.

Most successful sales reps excel at ?active listening? which means they are suspending their own thoughts when the customer is speaking and focusing 100% on listening to the customer.

It is not enough to listen to a customer.? The customer must also feel that you are listening to them.?? Great listeners do this by using such techniques as asking questions, paraphrasing, summarizing and empathizing with the customer.

Providing Value.? Sales reps also need to add value throughout the sales process.? Unfortunately, very little value is created by schmoozing.? To create real value, sales reps need to provide the knowledge or expertise their customers need to solve business problems.

Ultimately, a little less schmoozing and a lot more relationship building through trust, listening, and value will result in a much more productive customer relationship.

A Beautiful Day | Souvenirs of Fatherhood

We settled into the silence and enjoyed our dinner together as a family, but so much had gone into that moment.

The food had just come ?fresh? out of the microwave, since it had sat on the kitchen table too long and cooled down. ?The few tiny drops of rain that fell before dinner had now stopped, mocking me for all of my panic, and leaving a somewhat damp, somewhat crisp feeling in the air. ?The spotty rain was visible only on my t-shirt, and so was the humid 90 degree heat that preceded the rain. ?I came in from outside and joined Erica in the kitchen. ?It was finally time to eat.

When Erica had pulled into the driveway only moments before, she was greeted by one screaming crying kid and another overly concerned big sister. ?I stuck my head out of the tent that was still set up in the backyard to explain, ?That one is fresh, I don?t know what he?s crying about now, but it?s not related to the phone call earlier.? She replied with a quizzical, ?What are you doing in the tent?? the rest of her sentence I?m sure was to be, ??when there is a kid crying in the house?? but to her credit, she didn?t ask the second part, and I may have just assumed it. ?Still, I felt I had to justify myself by explaining that it?was?raining just a few minutes ago and I didn?t want all of their sleeping stuff to be wet for tonight. ?I think I actually used the word ?thunderstorming? which was stretching the truth.

Before she came home, she called me to tell me that she would be very late. ?Even though she was told to pick up the cake at 6:00 the bakery was closed. ?She was waiting for a manager to come and open it up to give her the cake for the preschool graduation ceremony the next day. ?I begged her to hurry home.

I lifted up the bottom edge of my t-shirt to wipe the sweat dripping off my brow. ?I had felt a raindrop earlier and so I jumped up from the picnic blanket and rushed the kids and all the food back into the house, before running out again to grab their gear.

But before that one solitary fateful drop of rain, Pax, Ella and I were all laying on the picnic blanket taking turns applying an ice pack to our foreheads. ?It started as a way to be silly so that Pax would let me put the ice on his forehead, which worked a couple of times but mostly just helped to distract him from the shock of what just happened.

I had seen it all unfold in slow motion. ?He stood up to get out of the pool and the first foot he lifted to try to put over the pool?s edge caught the very tip of his toes at the top of the pool, sending his hands high in the air and toppling him face first onto the driveway. ?I rushed over and rinsed him off to see what the damage was. ?By his crying I thought we would have to make a trip to the emergency room. ?Once I could see the small scrape where the blood was coming from, amidst the black and blue mark on his forehead, I knew we could handle it at home. ?I sat him on the blanket and got him a towel from the house and immediately dialed his mommy.

Meanwhile, Ella yelled to me from the swimming pool asking to get out. ?Erica called my phone again but I had to let it go to voicemail. ?The ribs were still on the grill cooking, the corn cobs in the house were still boiling and then Ella called again to me with her final plea of, ?I have to go potty? which at first, caught me off guard. ?My initial reaction was that she was in a pool, and I gave it a low priority, but after more of her persistence, I left Pax with instructions to hold the ice pack to his head and took Ella in the house to help her get out of her swimsuit and make it in time.

Erica had just called a few minutes before with a status report telling me that she would be a few minutes late because it seems the store was having problems with their photo printing station.

I can still see me now, the trimmed meat searing on the grill, the smell of smoke and barbecue filling the air. ?I said hello to an old friend and simultaneously handled disputes from the pool with a wave of my hand. ?Erica left with the promise that she would be back soon. ?The sun was shining and the clouds were a brilliant white against a bright blue. ?It was a beautiful day. ?At this point, all I heard was some thunder in the distance. ?I was clueless as to everything that was about to transpire around me. ?I actually thought we would make it out unscathed and that Erica would arrive home just in time to sit down and enjoy a nice Memorial Day picnic with the family.

Now, as we sat inside around the kitchen table and looked out the window at the grey skies, the comfortable silence was a welcomed reminder of all the fun we had starting even the night before and how tired we all must be. And that it was still a beautiful day together.
