Exhibition on Vietnam?s festivals opens in France
An exhibition of photographs featuring traditional Vietnamese festivals has opened in the Vietnamese Cultural Centre in France.
Jointly organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism?s Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibitions and the Vietnamese Cultural Centre in France, the exhibition is one of many activities being held to celebrate the 122nd anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh?s birth.
The exhibition includes more than 80 photos of traditional festivals in Vietnam such as the Hung Kings Temple Festival in northern Phu Tho province, the Buffalo Fighting Festival in Vinh Phuc province, My Son Festival in Quang Nam province and the Elephant Festival in the Central Highlands.
The photos depict the rituals, faiths, customs and life styles in different parts of Vietnam. They were selected from a selection of top Vietnamese photographers, who have won awards at competitions both in and outside of the country.
When speaking at the event, Nguyen Trung Nhat, the department?s Director said that the exhibition will enable French people, the Vietnamese community in France and international friends understand more about the country?s different cultures and the traditional festivals held by Vietnamese ethnic groups.
According to Le Hong Chuong, Director of the Vietnamese Cultural Centre in France, it will promote Vietnamese culture and encourage tourists from France and across Europe to visit the country.
During the event, a number of Vietnamese students currently studying in France entertained visitors with a concert of traditional songs and music.
VUFO receives Ho Chi Minh memorabilia from India

The President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO), Vu Xuan Hong received a delegation of the India Vietnam Solidarity Committee of West-Bengal state led by its President Geetesh Sharman in Hanoi on May 21.
At the reception, Sharman presented the VUFO with valuable items, including pictures of late President Ho Chi Minh during his visit to Kolkata city in 1946, a poem he wrote for Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and a collection of poems of Nguyen Trai and Ho Chi Minh published in India.
For his part, Hong thanked the goodwill of the Indian friends and said these items would be put on display for Vietnamese people and international friends to see.
Student orchestra offers free court music show
The nha nhac (court music) orchestra of students from the Hue Conservatory of Music impressed audiences during their debut show on Saturday at the former royal citadel of Hue.
Gathering more than 20 students from the music conservatory?s Heritage Music Department, the orchestra has staged 12 repertoires, which used to be performed for special occasions of the royal court during the Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945).
After the debut show, the orchestra will offer visitors and music fans a free concert every Saturday, from 5-6pm, at Nghinh Luong Temple on Le Duan Street.
Sacrificed buffalo skeleton found at heritage site
An animal skeleton found at Nam Giao worshipping platform in central Thanh Hoa Province is believed to be the first such discovery in the history of archaeology in Viet Nam.
The undamaged buffalo skeleton was uncovered at the Ho Citadel in Vinh Loc Commune.
Vu The Long, of the Viet Nam Institute of Archaeology, said the find was a big surprise for scientists as nothing similar had been found at the worshipping platforms of different dynasties across the country.
The fact the buffalo skeleton was buried directly underneath the biggest surrounding wall of Nam Giao platform led scientists to believe it was sacrificed when Royal Mandarin Ho Quy Ly ordered the platform built in 1402. The buffalo was sacrificed and then buried underneath the platform wall, he said.
After scientific research, the skeleton will be restored for display at the Ho Citadel, a World?s Cultural Heritage.
Local photographers make ?Who?s Who? list
Four Vietnamese photographers have made the world-wide Who?s Who in Photography list for last year, announced by the Photographic Society of America.
The photographers, who were required to have entered at least 10 exhibitions last year to be eligible for the annual list, are Dao Tien Dat, Tran Phong, Le Hong Linh and Ho Anh Tien.
Dat, from the central province of Binh Dinh, ranks second in the small black-and-white category while Linh from HCM City is 14th.
Phong from Gia Lai ranks fourth and 14th in the digital and photo travel divisions, respectively.
Tien is 12th in the colour photo category.
