Egyptian opposition politician demands election boycott

CAIRO (Reuters) - An opposition leader called on Saturday for Egyptians to boycott elections due to start in April, saying the process under Islamist President Mohamed Mursi would be "an act of deception".

Islamists, who have won every election since the 2011 overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, dismissed any suggestion that the parliamentary polls would lack credibility and predicted a strong turnout.

While divisions between the Islamists and opposition remain deep, Mursi appeared ready to soothe anger among the Christian minority over the election schedule. The speaker of Egypt's upper house said Mursi would change the dates to avoid Coptic Christians having to vote during their Easter celebrations.

Mursi called the lower house elections on Thursday, aiming to conclude Egypt's turbulent transition to democracy.

However, liberal politician Mohamed ElBaradei drew comparisons with the last parliamentary polls to be held under Mubarak in 2010, a vote which was widely seen as rigged.

ElBaradei, a former U.N. nuclear agency chief, noted he had called for a boycott in 2010 "to expose sham democracy".

"Today I repeat my call, (I) will not be part of an act of deception," he said on his Twitter account.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which backs Mursi, rejected any call to boycott the voting which has been scheduled in four stages from April 27 to June. Essam Erian, a senior member of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, said the polls would be carried out under "complete judicial supervision" as well as being followed by Egyptian, regional and international media.

Voting would be monitored by Egyptian and foreign civil society and human rights organizations, he said on his Facebook page, adding that he expected wide participation.

COPTIC ANGER

Egyptian elections have been supervised by judges since the revolution. The relatively small numbers of judges have required the drawn-out process, allowing them to oversee voting in different regions on different days.

The opposition says Mursi should not have called the elections until a number of disputes had been settled, chiefly a new constitution produced by an Islamist-dominated assembly which contributed to serious street violence last year.

Mursi's announcement of the dates drew fire from Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of the population, as the schedule would interfere with their Easter festival.

Ahmed Fahmy, the speaker of the Shura Council, said Mursi would respond to these worries. "The president answered the requests of the Coptic members and will issue a statement changing the dates of the elections," he told lawmakers.

The state news agency MENA quoted a presidential aide as saying a statement on new dates would be issued "within hours".

Islamists have used well-organized campaign operations to win every election since the revolution, while the liberal and leftist opposition has been beset by divisions. Previous opposition boycott threats have failed to materialize.

The National Salvation Front (NSF), which groups a number of parties opposed to the Islamists including ElBaradei's, is due to decide in the coming week whether to join a boycott.

"This is Dr. ElBaradei's own position and own opinion," said NSF spokesman Khaled Dawood, but he added that other NSF leaders were sympathetic to the idea of a boycott.

"This is yet another individual move by the Muslim Brotherhood and President Mursi, establishing facts on the ground and then asking you to basically go with the rules of the game they've set on their own," he said.

Jeter resumes on-field running drills in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Yankees captain Derek Jeter practiced on-field running and agility drills for the first time since breaking his ankle last fall.

Jeter worked out at Steinbrenner Field on Saturday with players who didn't travel for the Yankees' spring training opener against Atlanta.

"It's a natural progression, but everything went good," Jeter said. "It went fine."

Jeter has been hitting and fielding grounders since the Yankees started full squad workouts last Monday. He had been running and stretching indoors.

"It's really nothing much different than what I was doing," Jeter said. "I was just at a different pace than everyone else. So while they're doing one thing, I don't want to be doing something else."

The 38-year-old broke his left ankle lunging for a grounder in the AL championship series opener against Detroit on Oct. 1 and had surgery a week later. He expects to be ready for opening day against Boston on April 1.

Jeter had a resurgent season in 2012, leading the American League with 216 hits and batting .316 with 15 homers and 58 RBIs. He first injured his ankle in mid-September and fouled balls off his foot several times after that.

Jeter and his teammates who stayed in Tampa didn't drink the water at the ballpark. Residents have been told to boil water after a power problem Friday at a local water facility.

Signs were posted in the clubhouse and throughout the ballpark saying "Do Not Drink The Water" along with procedures on boiling water.

Bottled water in a cooler replaced the normal water bucket in the dugout. Players and staff were alerted to the situation by text message Friday afternoon.

Notes: RHP Phil Hughes (bulging disk) said he will start working out in a pool Sunday. He could resume throwing in the next few days. ... Closer Mariano Rivera (knee surgery) said he could throw batting practice for the second time on Monday. ... Yankees minor league RHP Nick Goody sprained his ankle Friday in a multi-vehicle car accident and is using crutches.

BASEBALL Flood of area prep stars on the diamond make college decisions

All Baseball Stories The diamond days of spring are still over a month away, but activity on the area?s high school baseball scene was quite busy the last few weeks as a slew of local prep stars decided on their respective college-playing destinations.

Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook?s Grant Reuss committed to Michigan, Birmingham Brother Rice?s Josh Smith committed to Kentucky, Madison Heights Bishop Foley's Nate Grys committed to Western Michigan and Pontiac?s Dazon Cole committed to Central Michigan.

The only senior of the bunch was Bloomfield Hills Andover catcher Nick Bredeson, who signed with Ohio University.

Cole, a right-handed pitcher, and Reuss, a 6-foot-5 lefty hurler, are both juniors, while Smith, also a tall, imposing southpaw fire-baller on the mound, and Grys, a hard-hitting outfielder, are each only sophomores.

Bredeson transferred to Andover this year after playing the last three seasons at state-powerhouse Brother Rice. Free from a log jam for playing time like when he was with Brother Rice, he will step into a situation at Andover where he will immediately be a key piece to the Barons? on-field puzzle.

?We?re super glad to get Nick into the mix for his last year of high school ball,? said Andover head coach Mike Boyd of the anticipated addition to his roster. ?His skills as a catcher are some of the best I?ve seen in a while and he has the personality that will allow to him to slide right into a veteran line-up and not have him or the team, miss a beat. I think it will be a good fit.?

Last season, Cole threw multiple no-hitters and hit over .400. When he?s not pitching, he is a quick-gloved shortstop and blazer on the base paths. During the winter sports season, Cole is a standout wrestler for the Phoenix grappling squad.

Reuss is ranked one of the top hurlers in the state?s Class of 2014. He clocks close to 90 miles an hour with his fast ball and had numerous double-digit strikeout performances as a sophomore last year.

Smith will slot in at No. 2 in Brother Rice?s rotation this spring, teaming with Warriors? ace Matt Ruppenthal (Vanderbilt) to give head coach Bob Riker a pair of elite Southeastern Conference recruits to throw at opponents in the team?s quest for a repeat Catholic League crown.

By snagging Smith, Kentucky has now came into Metro Detroit and walked away with one of its most coveted recruits for the second time in three years. Back in 2011, the Wildcats snared Madison Heights Lamphere?s all-state catcher Greg Fettes, currently a redshirt freshman fighting it out for a starting spot behind the plate for the Wildcats.

Grys was a member of Bishop Foley?s 2012 state championship club and has been starting at quarterback for the Ventures varsity football team since he was a freshman.

Burger King Seizes Spotlight After Twitter Hack

Despite what may have seemed like a catastrophe, Burger King has a chance to turn yesterday's Twitter hack into a public relations success.

Around noon Monday (Feb. 18), the fast-food giant's Twitter feed was taken over by someone outside the company who quickly changed the feed's icon to golden arches and tweeted "We just got sold to McDonald's."? For the next hour, the feed was filled with more than 50 unauthorized tweets, including some with racial and drug references.

The account was eventually shut down, while Burger King's social media team worked with Twitter to reclaim the feed. While the damage had been done, the incident did garner Burger King a ton of attention.? In just one day, BK's Twitter account gained nearly 60,000 new followers.

By Monday night, Burger King was trying to make the best of the situation, tweeting to its followers: "Interesting day here at BURGER KING, but we're back! Welcome to our new followers. Hope you all stick around!"

Media publicist Bruce Serbin thinks Burger King's social media team did a great job containing the situation quickly.

"It could have been disastrous, but I think they handled it brilliantly," Serbin told BusinessNewsDaily. "They got out in front of the situation and didn't let it overrun them."

Serbin thinks Burger King did an excellent job of keeping its followers and customers informed of what was going on, which he believes is critical in any crisis.

"In these types of crisis situation, you have to over-communicate," Serbin said. "You need to be honest and straightforward, otherwise rumors will start to spread."

With Burger King back in control of the situation, it is important that they continue leveraging the publicity, Serbin said.

He said providing an incentive for Twitter followers to visit a Burger King restaurant, like giving them free French fries if they bring in a McDonald's receipt from the last week, would help them hold onto their new flock of fans.

"They need something like that to help keep the momentum going," Serbin said.

Customer service consultant Brad Cleveland agrees that a giveaway, if done right, would be an excellent way to help take advantage of what started as a every social media marketing executive's worst nightmare.

"They need to do it with humility and a smile," Cleveland said.

Cleveland said the incident should remind all businesses, regardless of size, that everyone is vulnerable to a bad social media situation.

"It's not if (it happens), it's when," he said.

Cleveland advises all businesses to have protocols in place to make sure they are prepared for a social media crisis.

"Think about how do we prevent it in the first place and what do we do when it happens," Cleveland said. "You need to know who jumps in and does what."

Cleveland also encourages businesses to make sure they are having an ongoing dialogue online so that if someone does take control of a Twitter or Facebook feed, followers will quickly realize something isn't right.

"When you have that ongoing dialogue, they are going to know when something isn't a fit," he said.

Prada 2012 Sales Surge 29 Percent on European Demand for Luxury

MILAN, Italy ? Prada SpA, an Italian maker of $1,150 studded leather slippers, reported a 29 percent increase in full-year sales, led by demand in Europe and Asia.

Revenue climbed to 3.3 billion euros ($4.4 billion) in the 12 months through January, the Milan-based company said today in a statement. The average of 28 analysts? estimates compiled by Bloomberg was 3.31 billion euros. Excluding currency swings, sales advanced 23 percent.

Prada said in December it was confident of positive full- year results as shoppers spent more on higher-priced goods and Asian tourists helped buoy demand in Europe. Fourth-quarter sales advanced 14 percent, excluding currency moves, even as the company limited markdowns, Prada said today. That compares with a 12 percent gain at Gucci owner PPR SA and 19 percent at Hermes International SCA in the last three months of 2012.

?The strength of our brands, our ability to interpret and anticipate market trends and our global retail network continue to form the basis for our long-term growth strategy,? Prada Chief Executive Officer Patrizio Bertelli said in the statement.

Full-year sales climbed 33 percent in Europe excluding Italy and 23 percent in the Asia Pacific region, excluding currency swings, Prada said. Same-store sales advanced 14 percent, meeting the company?s forecast of a percentage increase in the mid-teens.

Famous Grey Poupon 'Pardon Me' ads return for Oscars

Grey Poupon's famous "Pardon Me" TV commercial is returning for a moment of Oscar glory.

After a 16-year hiatus, the mustard that mocked its own stuffy image in one of TV's most famous commercials will once again take to the airwaves during the Academy Awards show on Feb. 24. The spot comes as Kraft Foods looks to boost sagging sales of the Dijon mustard, which is facing competition from a growing variety of high-end condiments on supermarket shelves.

The new ad begins in the same way as the original ? an aristocratic English gentleman is being chauffeured in the countryside, when another car pulls up alongside them at a stop. The back window rolls down and a second man asks in an over-the-top snooty accent, "Pardon me, would you have any Grey Poupon?"

The first man courteously responds, "But of course" and hands him a jar out the window.

In the new version, however, the scene continues with the second car speeding off without returning the mustard. A wild car chase through a golf course and city streets ensues, complete with explosions to make the spot look like a trailer for an action adventure movie.

The ad was made by the agency Crispin Porter & Bogusky, which has also developed ads for Domino's, Burger King and Best Buy. It was directed by Bryan Buckley, who is known for making more than 40 Super Bowl commercials.

Although the original Grey Poupon ad first aired in 1981, with variations of it running through 1997, it's become so ingrained in pop culture that even teenagers today are familiar with its general spirit, said Sara Braun, who heads Grey Poupon, Miracle Whip and Mayo at Kraft Foods.

The problem is that the familiarity with the commercial hasn't been doing much for sales. Over the past four years, the company says Grey Poupon's sales have been flat to down as more mustards and other condiments have appeared on the shelves. Its share of the U.S. mustard market has fallen from 13.7 percent in 2003 to 11.4 percent last year, according to market researcher Euromonitor. So now Kraft is hoping to once again put the mustard in the spotlight.

"Grey Poupon is not as relevant as it was," Braun said.

Kraft Foods Group Inc. plans to air the ad only once on TV, after which it will be available online. According to Kantar Media, a 30-second spot during the Oscars this year is estimated to cost $1.7 million. But Kraft, based in Northfield, Ill., is hoping the high-profile placement will help spark enough interest to engage people in online marketing campaigns.

"It's the classiest award show of the year, so it's very in line with the brand," said Braun, who noted that the marketing for the Dijon has always made fun of its own upper-crust image.

Last year, for example, Kraft began an online campaign with a members-only Facebook page called "The Society of Good Taste." Fans had to apply and have their profiles screened to determine whether they met the club's standards. For example, people were given points for liking the opera and New York Times, or living in Chicago or New York and attending Ivy League schools. Points were taken away if people used poor grammar in their posts.

Jokes aside, Braun said there's a seed of truth to that higher-end image; Grey Poupon customers tend to be skewed toward household incomes of $70,000 or more.

McCready shot dog before killing herself, sheriff says | MyFOX8.com ...

Country singer Mindy McCready

Country singer Mindy McCready

HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. (CNN) ? Country singer Mindy McCready appears to have shot a dog that belonged to her late boyfriend, David Wilson, prior to shooting herself, Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss said Monday.
The dog died.
On Sunday, McCready, whose turbulent personal life overshadowed her music, was found dead on the front porch of her Arkansas home ? victim, authorities said, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was 37.
McCready leaves behind two sons ? 6-year-old Zander and 10-month-old Zane.
?Zane and Zander are loved, cared for and comfortable with foster families at this time,? her representative told CNN in a statement.
Just a month earlier, police had paid another visit to the house in Heber Springs.
On that day, they found the infant?s father ? record producer David Wilson ? dead on the porch.
He too had apparently taken his own life. He too had used a gun.
Spiraling downward
McCready burst onto the music scene in 1996 with her debut album, ?Ten Thousand Angels.?
It sold more than 2 million copies. Her chart-topping hit ?Guys Do It All The Time? followed that same year.
In all, she put 14 songs and six of her albums on the Billboard country charts.
But through it all, she was spiraling downward; the final fall was painful and precipitous.
She struggled with addiction and mental illness, often publicly.
In 2004, McCready was placed on three years? probation after she pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining the painkiller OxyContin at a pharmacy.
The next year, she was arrested in Nashville for drunken driving, and was allegedly beaten and choked by ex-boyfriend Billy McKnight, who was charged with attempted murder.
?Yes, things have been going bad,? she told CNN in 2005. ?I think it?s God?s way of getting my attention, saying, ?You better wake up, girl. I have important stuff for you to do in life,? and I?ve definitely been preoccupied or sidetracked doing the wrong things.?
Before 2005 ended, McCready had suffered two drug overdoses, was arrested on drug charges, was pregnant with McKnight?s child and, authorities say, attempted suicide.
She attempted suicide again in 2008, authorities say, and overdosed again on drugs in 2010 before joining the cast of VH1?s ?Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.? The reality show chronicles the lives of celebrities as they?re treated for alcohol and drug addiction.
Celebrity rehab
Dr. Drew Pinsky said he contacted McCready last month after her boyfriend?s death.
?When I heard she was struggling, I did reach out to her and urged her to go to take care of herself, get in a facility if she felt she needed,? said Pinsky, who hosts a program on CNN?s sister network HLN.
?Her biggest fear was the stigma of doing so and what people would think if she, God forbid, took care of herself. And this to me is the most distressing part of this story. She is a lovely woman, we have lost her, and it didn?t have to go down like this.?
On one episode of the show, McCready performed ?I?m Still Here,? dedicating it to the other cast members, who included Dennis Rodman, Heidi Fleiss and Mackenzie Phillips.
?When I was writing this song, I was in jail,? the singer said tearfully. ?I never knew it, but I was writing for all of you.?
Custody battle
In recent years, McCready had waged a public battle for custody of her elder son, Zander, whose father is McKnight.
In 2011, she took the boy from her mother, who had legal custody, and fled with him to her home in Arkansas, saying she had concerns over his safety.
A judge ordered authorities to pick up the boy and, days later, authorities found the boy and McCready in a closet at her home.
In addition to her relationship with McKnight, McCready had romances with musician David Malloy and actor Dean Cain; she also said she had had an affair with baseball player Roger Clemens, which he didn?t confirm or deny.
But Clemens did issue a statement Monday from training camp with the Houston Astros in Kissimmee, Florida. ?Yes, this is sad news,? he said. ?I had heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life. The few times that I had met her and her manager/agent they were extremely nice.?
In 2010, Vivid Entertainment released a porn video called ?Mindy McCready, Baseball Mistress? that featured McCready having sex with a man referred to as ?Peter? and talking about her exploits with Clemens.
Country outpouring
Sunday night, country music stars offered their condolences as they learned of McCready?s death.
?My heart goes out to Mindy McCready?s family. I knew her well,? singer LeAnn Rimes said on Twitter. ?It?s a horrible tragedy. May peace be with her sons.?
Carrie Underwood said she grew up listening to McCready. And country artist Terri Clark said she had had some fun times with her ?back in the day.?
?I hope our society shows compassion and realizes the severity and reality of mental illness, and addiction,? she tweeted.
Singer Wynonna Judd posted a series of tweets also calling attention to addiction and mental illness.
?It breaks my heart what addiction continues to take from this life,? she said. ?Addiction is a disEASE & not a character flaw. When the pain becomes too much, it causes people to want that pain to stop. This is just so unbelieveable & so sad.?
In her words
A year ago, McCready posted excerpts of a book she said was upcoming about her life. She acknowledged a difficult upbringing, personal problems and the challenges she faced turning her life around.
?I haven?t had a hit in almost a decade,? she wrote in January 2012 on her official fan website. ?I?ve spent my fortune, tarnished my public view and made myself the brunt of punch line after punch line.
?I?ve been beaten, sued, robbed, arrested, jailed, and evicted.
?But I?m still here. With a handful of people that I know and trust, a revived determination, and both middle fingers up in the air, I?m ready. I?ve been here before. I?m a fighter. I?m down, but I?ll never be out.?
But Sunday, on the porch of her home, she may have changed her mind.
On Monday, McCready?s publicist asked that the family be left alone.
?It is with the deepest sadness we say goodbye to an extraordinary and gifted talent, a daughter, a mother and friend, Miss Mindy McCready,? said Kat Atwood in a statement.
?Our attention at this time is devoted to the needs and care of Mindy?s family. As Mindy spent much of her life in the public eye, we respectfully request your consideration and sensitivity to enable friends and family this time of ?quiet.??
Planning is under way by McCready?s ?friends in music? to organize a memorial in Nashville, she said. By Ed Payne, CNN. CNN?s Vivian Kuo, Elwyn Lopez and Melissa Gray contributed to this report.

Illicit Meth Trade Between China And North Korea Reveals A Lot About Their Relationship

AS NEW year fireworks crackle and boom amid the neon beside the Yalu river, a small boat inches silently across the stretch of water that forms the border with North Korea. A low block of flats is just visible on the other side, pitch-black save for a single prick of electricity. Clever timing by the smugglers, smiles a watching Chinese resident: "All the police are eating their new year meal."

When North Korea tested a third nuclear weapon on February 12th, it was not security that was troubling the residents of towns along China?s 1,420km (880-mile) border with North Korea. "Trade [with North Korea] is a large part of Dandong?s economy," says Wu Yang, owner of an ornament company that uses semi-precious stones from the North. "I?m worried it will be affected," she says.

Fuel, rice, wheat and basic consumer goods all flow legally, usually by lorry over bridges on the Yalu, into North Korea. Imports from the North include minerals, coal, scrap metal and seafood. There is also a thriving black-market trade both ways, usually by boat. This feeds the growing demand for other non-staple products among the new North Korean nouveaux riches. Border police, especially in the North, are known to take bribes to allow illicit trade to pass. One illegal North Korean export causing social problems is crystal meth, a drug known in China as bingdu, or "ice".

If China?s government clamps down on official trade with the North to express its displeasure at the nuclear test, the result will only be more smuggling, says a local who has invested in North Korean minerals. Illicit trade brings its own problems. North Korean border guards shot dead three Chinese smugglers in 2010, and tensions remain.

Meanwhile, as goods flow into North Korea, people continue to flow out. Some come legally to work in North Korean restaurants in Dandong and will return home. Outwardly they are unswervingly loyal--"China is all right, but North Korea is better," says one--but local Chinese say they are more confident and chatty than before. Many more flee illegally across the river and live in secret in China or try to make it to South Korea, often through a third country. Tesco, a British supermarket chain, has a store in Dandong with a special section offering "Korean food"--mainly imported from South Korea--that an employee says specifically caters to North Koreans.

Wealthy tourists from elsewhere in China pay for boat rides on the river or can even book a trip into North Korea itself, perhaps to remind themselves how far China has come. Others buy cigarettes and trinkets labelled as North Korean but, according to locals, actually made in China. There is sympathy for North Koreans, but no-one wants to miss a good business opportunity.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini dropping in May?

A slimmed-down version of the Galaxy S4 will be along a matter of weeks after Samsung?s full-sized flagship phone for 2013, reports suggest, presumably aimed at the shrinking market of consumers turned off by smartphones? ever-expanding dimensions.

According to sources cited by Sam Mobile, the so-called Galaxy S4 Mini is set to be available from week 21 of this year, which equates to a likely street date of some time around the start of May.

Specs for the S4 Mini are as yet unknown. But as with previous junior versions of Galaxy S phones, it is expected to feature a more modest screen and will as likely ditch its big brother?s rumoured eight-core processor for a less brawny quad-core model.

Details of the S4 are less sketchy. However, rumours suggest that when it debuts in March or April it will be home to a 4.99-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display and a 13-megapixel camera.

The phone is also thought to debut a new gesture-based input system that would enable users to interact with their phone by hovering their fingers above the screen.

GOP Senator Would Take Away Health Coverage From 30 Million Americans To Avoid Military Cuts

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said Sunday the government should protect the Defense Department from automatic spending cuts by slashing $1.2 trillion from the Affordable Care Act.

During an appearance on Fox News Sunday, Graham suggested that the sequester?s across-the-board cuts to federal spending, including about a roughly 7.5 percent reduction in military spending, would be ?destroying the military.? But rather than agree to President Obama?s proposed alternatives to the sequester, the South Carolina Republican said we should save money by eliminating health care for the 30 million people covered by the Affordable Care Act:

CHRIS WALLACE: Let me just ask you one more question about the sequestration before we let you go, Senator. You know if we go into the sequester, the president is going to hammer Republicans, the White House already put out a list of all the things, terrible things that will happen if a sequester kicks in, 70,000 children losing Head Start. 2100 fewer food inspectors and small business will lose $900 million in loan guarantees and you know, Senator, the president will say your party is forcing this to protect tax cuts for the wealthy.

GRAHAM: Well, all i can say is the commander-in-chief thought ? came up with the idea of sequestration, destroying the military and putting a lot of good programs at risk. It is my belief ? take Obamacare and put it on the table. You can make $86,000 a year in income and still get a government subsidy under Obamacare. Obamacare is destroying health care in this country and people are leaving the private sector, because their companies cannot afford to offer Obamacare and if you want to look at ways to find $1.2 trillion in savings over the next decade, look at Obamacare, don?t destroy the military and cut blindly across the board. There are many ways to do it but the president is the commander-in-chief and on his watch we?ll begin to unravel the finest military in the history of the world, at a time when we need it most. The Iranians are watching us, we are allowing people to be destroyed in Syria, and i?m disappointed in our commander-in-chief.

The draconian cuts to vital programs Graham and other Republicans are demanding, including providing health insurance for the millions of Americans who otherwise would not have it, will hurt the economy and hurt real people.

But Graham?s ?solution? also misses a key reality: Obamacare actually reduced the deficit. His proposal to put its elimination on the table would mean increasing the budget deficit by an estimated $109 billion over the same 10-year period, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

    G'day!

Hi all! My name is Sarge, which comes from a RL nickname. I know, miraculously creative considering I just joined up to a site that depends on creativity and imagination. Haha. I don't know if your member base is largely American or whatnot, but I'm an Aussie, so hopefully I'm adding a little diversity here.

I found Role Play Gateway through a Google search. I did some play-by-post role playing years ago for some time and loved it. That site kinda fell of wagon, so my outlet for role playing drifted away with it. I was thinking about getting back into but had no idea where to go. So tonight I 'Googled' it. A few places came up, and after having a look around, I decided this may just be the one for me! Looks like a great place.

I am interested in basically all kinds of RP, though I do tend to favour a lot of the modern settings. I'll have a go at just about anything with characters that leap out at me as interesting though. I love creating chemistry (be it positive or negative) between characters. In one respect I'm less of a storyteller and more of a character-actor type. If that makes a lick of sense. Not that I do that consciously, but it just tends to be more my style. I'm all about character interaction. I love a good story though! I don't mean I sacrifice the story... Damn, I hope not!

Outside the RP World, my hobbies revolve around music and film. The film thing kind of links I think, as the role play game is basically literary acting. At least that's how I look at it, and I love the idea of playing different characters, like a real actor! Haha.

I read a topic on things to think about including when introducing yourself here. The last thing said was "Do we get cookies for looking through your thread and saying hello?" I cannot offer cookies, since I'm struggling to fit them through the CD drive (that's how they're sent, right??), but I CAN give you my eternal gratitude and appreciation for welcoming me. On second thoughts, cookies would be so much better. Sorry. :(

Stocks waver as investors watch G20 talks

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stock indexes are little changed in midday trading on Wall Street as investors keep a close eye on a meeting of global finance ministers in Moscow.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was on track for a seventh straight week of gains.

At midday Friday the Dow Jones industrial average was up two points at 13,975. The S&P slipped half a point to 1,520. The Nasdaq composite also lost half a point to 3,198.

Currency policy is high on the agenda at the meeting of the Group of 20 finance ministers. Japan's currency will be of particular interest because the country has been forcing the yen's value lower.

Energy stocks fell as the price of crude oil dropped nearly 2 percent to $95.52 a barrel.

Beach Energy reports gas flow from Halifax-1 unconventional well

Beach Energy Ltd advises that the flow back of stimulation fluid and gas from the Halifax-1 well, located in ATP 855P (Beach 60% and operator, Icon Energy Ltd 40%), commenced on 11 February 2012. As at 6:00pm on Wednesday, 13 February, the flow was being constrained to 2.2 MMscfd by a 24/64' choke due to temperature restrictions on elements of the surface equipment. It is anticipated that the choke will be further opened as the ratio of gas to fluid in the well stream increases.

The well reached total depth at 4,267 metres, after which a 14 stage fracture stimulation program was completed throughout the whole of the gas saturated Permian target zone. Seven stages were completed in the deeper Patchawarra Formation, one in the Murteree Shale, two in the Epsilon Formation, two in the Roseneath Shale, one in the Daralingie Formation and one in the Toolachee Formation.

'Blade Runner' accused of 'premeditated' murder

After being arrested and charged with murdering his girlfriend, Olympian Oscar Pistorius cried during his first court appearance Friday. Police say Reeva Steenkamp was shot four times with a pistol that is registered to Pistorius, and Pistorius' agent released a statement saying the murder is 'disputed in the strongest terms.' NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Olympic and Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius sobbed as he appeared in a South African court Friday and was accused of the "premeditated" murder of his girlfriend.

The sprinter -- nicknamed "Blade Runner" because he races wearing carbon-fiber prosthetic blades after he was born without a fibula in both legs ? is accused of?killing model Reeva Steenkamp at his home in a Pretoria suburb early Thursday.

Pistorius disputes the accusations in "the strongest terms," according to a statement issued following the court appearance which said the runner sent "his deepest sympathies" to Steenkamp's family.

South African police said Thursday that Pistorius and Steenkamp, 30, were the only people in the house at the time of the shooting.

Oscar Pistorius, the superstar athlete who became the first double amputee sprinter to compete in the Olympics, is the sole suspect in the murder of law school graduate and famous South African model Reeva Steenkamp. NBC's Rehema Ellis reports.

Pistorius, 26, arrived at the court about two hours before the hearing that began at about 4:30 a.m. ET Friday.

As the hearing started, Pistorius kept his head down, cried and held his hands to his face. At times, he appeared confused.

"Take it easy. Come, take a seat," Reuters quoted Magistrate Desmond Nair as telling him.

A defense lawyer referred to his client?s ?traumatised state of mind.?

Several of Pistorius? family members were in the courtroom and also appeared emotional; one seemed distraught and others wept.

Prosecutors alleged the Olympic runner had committed "premeditated murder" and he was formally charged.

Pistorius was remanded in custody pending a bail hearing next week. An application by the media for the proceedings to be broadcast was rejected at the start of the hearing.

After the hearing, a statement issued by Pistorius' agent said: "The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms." It added:

"Oscar Pistorius has made history as an Olympic and Paralympic sportsman and has been an inspiration to others the world over. He has made it very clear that he would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family of Reeva. He would also like to express his thanks through us today for all the messages of support he has received - but as stated our thoughts and prayers today should be for Reeva and her family - regardless of the circumstances."

Citing a neighbor, the Afrikaans-language Beeld newspaper?reported Friday that Pistorius shot his girlfriend four times through a bathroom door. NBC News could not independently verify the report, which was translated by Reuters.

Numerous media outlets reported Thursday that Pistorius may have mistaken the woman for an intruder, but police said neighbors had heard noises before the shots and that there had been previous "domestic" incidents at the house.

The athlete who rose to fame in London last summer as the first amputee runner in the Olympics has reportedly been arrested by South African police after his girlfriend was shot and killed in his home. NBC's Rohit Kachroo reports and NBC sports analyst Ato Boldon talks about the case, calling it an "absolute shock."

    'Charming, great guy'
The couple had been dating for several months, and??seemed happy,? Steenkamp?s publicist Sarit Tomlinson told TODAY on Thursday. There was no sign of discord between the two, she said.

Tomlinson said that Pistorius was a ?charming, great guy.?

According to her Facebook page, Steenkamp was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and raised in Port Elizabeth.

She?earned a law degree at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University before moving to Johannesburg and earning a job as the South African face of cosmetics maker Avon.

Greg Stokell, headmaster of St. Dominic?s Priory school in Port Elizabeth, told South Africa's The Times newspaper that Steenkamp was ?a vibrant, friendly, diligent, and motivated student who was popular with and respected by staff and peers alike.?

From an early age, "Reeva had the full support of her parents who encouraged her to maximize her strengths and abilities to achieve her dreams,? Stokell told the paper. ?She set high goals for herself in everything she did and she consistently converted opportunities into success.?

A police officer holds a gun that was allegedly used in the shooting of Reeva Steenkamp, Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend.

Steenkamp was featured in men?s magazine FHM in December 2011, and named one of the publication?s 100 Sexiest Women in the World for two years in a row.

Pistorius battled for years to be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes and was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics.

He qualified for the 400-meter semi-finals and 4 x 400-meter final at the London 2012 Summer Games.

His website highlighted that Pistorius ran in 11 races during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralymics and returned home with "two Paralympic gold medals, Paralympic silver, two world records, a Paralympic record, an Olympic individual semi-final and an Olympic final."

NBC's John Newland, Jason Cumming and Matthew DeLuca, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Pistorius, a double amputee born without fibulas in his legs, has trained hard to participate in the Olympics despite having to wear prosthetic legs. NBC's Mary Carillo reports.
