Cardiff news: Butchers and Barbers exhibition celebrates Clifton Street?s thriving community

AN EXHIBITION about one of Cardiff?s thriving communities opens this week, and it?s a film by two local sisters that promises to be the big draw.

Butchers and Barbers is a portrait of life on Clifton Street and has been a collaboration between Adamsdown Arts Association and twin sisters Zo? and Christabel Gingell.

The two have been making films together for more than 10 years; Chrissy with a long-standing background as a director in TV documentary, and Zo? as a producer in arts and television. Their working name is the apt Twosome Films.

Having grown up locally, and having moved away ? it?s only in the last five years that they have been simultaneously living in the area.

Last year, Zo? became involved with Adamsdown Arts Association, the volunteer-led community group behind the Adamsdown Museum exhibition which starts next Thursday at the Old Library in the Hayes.

They have made a film about the inner city shopping area of Clifton Street entitled Butchers and Barbers, a portrait of life on Clifton Street.

Zoe said: ?We?ve always been fascinated with Clifton Street and the Adamsdown Museum project has provided the ideal opportunity for us to work together to make a film on our doorstep.

?Some of our earliest memories are of our mum, wheeling us daily up in the double-pram to shop. I vividly remember being a baby and passers-by peering in at the two of us and cooing over us. I could feel a strong sense of community even way back then.?

The theme for the exhibition is Adamsdown ? past, present and future. People who lived, worked and studied in Adamsdown were asked to contribute their own art work from photography, film or sculpture. Workshops took place in two local schools ? Tredegarville Church in Wales Primary and Adamsdown Primary ? and contributions from the local Homework Club, knit and natter group, STAR camera club, and Adamsdown Arts Association members resulted in a colourful range of pieces, created by all ages.

The Adamsdown Museum exhibition will be held at the Cardiff Story Museum, Old Library, until February 10, with the launch of the project at 6pm on Thursday.
