Samsung Galaxy S Sales Hit 100 Million

Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung on Monday announced a major milestone: global sales of its flagship Galaxy S smartphones have hit 100 million units since the first model made its debut in 2010.

The original Galaxy S smartphone, launched in June 2010, has sold some 24 million units to date, with 10 million purchased during the first seven months of launch, Samsung said. The follow-up Galaxy S II, launched in April 2011, reached the 10 million sales mark in just five months, and has logged sales of around 40 million units to date.

The fastest-selling device in the lineup, however, is the Galaxy S III . The uber-popular phone, unveiled this past May, achieved 20 million global sales in just 100 days, and has now passed the 40 million unit sales mark.

Samsung last year overtook Nokia for the first time in 14 years to become the top phone maker of 2012, according to data from IHS iSuppli. Samsung last year also earned top honors in the global smartphone market, while widening its lead against runner-up Apple.

Samsung has found success designing and manufacturing phones quickly, and releasing dozens of new models each year ranging from high-end to budget devices, according to IHS iSuppli. The company also recently celebrated strong sales of its Galaxy Note II phablet, which hit more than 5 million unit sales just two months after its release.

The Korean electronics giant also closed out 2012 at the top of the U.S. mobile phone market, according to data from comScore. In the three months ending in November, 26.9 percent of mobile phones in the U.S. were made by Samsung.
